Everything's More Fun In Pigtails!

Poor Jerry.

My friend is going to rue the day that he told me about his one-year gift subscription to Netflix, and his subsequent offer to try to get me a hard-to-find DVD. Oh, once that ball was in motion, I had him getting all kinds of DVDs. He now fears what will be suggested for him now that he has America’s Next Top Model: Cycle 1 and Watcher in the Woods on his rented list. I also remember asking him to get a movie just because I heard that it had a random dwarf in a red raincoat in it. Anyone who has seen Don’t Look Now will know why I needed to see another movie with such a thing in it. It’s a NEED, people. I don’t even remember what movie that was that I got him to rent, but I do remember it being painfully bad. We pretty much just skipped to the scene selection to find the dwarf scene. Sadly, it was a letdown. Sassy has even gotten into the act, convincing Jerry to rent Escape to Witch Mountain for our next movie night. (I’ve never seen it. I know.) Maybe the part that I feel bad about is the fact that aside from the Top Model, I make Jerry watch my movie whims with me.

Yeah.

I’m still hearing about Watcher in the Woods.

I tried to explain going into it that he should be excited, because it was Disney’s attempt at a horror movie. The novelty! The excitement! When the movie started up and memories of it started coming back to me as I watched, I then started to try to backpedal, throwing out the fact that I hadn’t seen the movie in 20 years. As I watched the look of horror and disgust growing on Jerry’s face, I suddenly blurted out, “This was really scary to 10 year-old girls. Pretend you’re a 10 year-old girl. That’s when I used to watch it.” Sadly, it was too late. Bette Davis had just made her first appearance and I heard what was the first of many subsequent “What the HELL is this?” complaints from Jerry. Then came the groaning. Then the threats. Finally, the guilt. “What did I ever do to you that you’re making me watch this?” I offered to turn it off and watch the rest myself, but I was met with a steely and icy, “Oh, no, we’re going to watch the whole thing. Because then you’ll understand my revenge when I exact it upon you.” Gulp. Jerry is one person whose revenge I do not want. He can be pure evil. It’s actually one of the things that I like most about him. But I fear now that my fond memories of watching a Disney “horror” movie over and over again when I was ten have now led to my impending destruction. But seriously, I remember that movie being a lot creepier when I was younger. And frankly, a lot better. Watching it now is quite amusing and horrifying at the same time. The stilted line readings, the cheesy effects, the whole “oh, come on” vibe of the screenplay – it’s all so, so bad. If you want a good laugh, rent it. If you do, you must, MUST watch the alternate endings. Jerry didn’t think the movie could get any worse until we watched those and some tree-creature thing appeared out of nowhere. Oh, it is good cinema. And now I’m fearing that Jerry is going to make me watch Liquid Sky again. Oy.

It’s probably a good thing that Sassy wasn’t at the Watcher in the Woods movie night, because she’d probably make me watch Head again. I had never seen the Monkees film masterpiece, so she said she would find a copy because I had to see it. After watching it, I am still wondering, the hell? Also, WHAT??! Why? Huh? But…what?!? Wait, no Last Train to Clarksville? But why are they…? Was Mickey always this strangely attractive? But what’s going on? And why…what?? There are no words, people. There are no words.

But seriously, no Clarksville?

Maybe I’ll invite Sassy to watch Manos: Hands of Fate with me and Jerry when it arrives this week. Bwah hah hah. But now that I’m trying to wrap my head around Head again, maybe not.
